Triangle Manufacturing solved an engineering and alignment problem for government ships' array radar systems with a custom designed and manufactured component. Triangle produced a multi-component, fully assembled ball and socket swivel bearing that allowed for self-alignment in radar adjustment and was specifically designed to allow for a long extrusion.

Triangle Manufacturing solved an engineering and alignment problem for government ships' array radar systems with a custom designed and manufactured component. Triangle produced a multi-component, fully assembled ball and socket swivel bearing that allowed for self-aligning radar adjustment and was specifically designed to include a long extrusion.

The largest challenge they faced when prodcuing this part was the custom long extrusion that was needed so the bushing was high enough to allow for a high level of angular adjustment. The customer requested at least 25 degrees of angular movement. Because of their expertise in stamp manufacturing, Triangle fulfilled this request in a cost-efficient manner.

The customer chose to use Triangle's HF size ball assembly, an iron ball and ring that provides the spherical portion of the alignment. Triangle purchased the threaded rod, which was a machined component. Triangle stamp manufactured the mounting and assembled them in-house. After being fully assembled, this four-component product was adhesively adhered to the surface, so no mounting holes were necessary.
Although this wasn't a typical use for Triangle spherical bearings, these plain bearings were perfect for the required re-alignment and maneuverability. Plain bearings are generally underutilized in almost every industry. Many customers and engineers assume that they need to purchase a costly ball bearing or rely on cast-iron mountings. In reality, stamped mountings and spherical bearings are a sturdy, smart and cost-effective option.
