“We are so encouraged by the success of Phonics Fun and Games for the iPhone that we have produced an iPad version," said former kindergarten teacher and Pre K Scholars founder, Amy Schwary. “The larger screen of the iPad really brings the characters to life. It is fun and easy for 3-6 year olds to master and works beautifully either freestanding or as a supplement to our Kindergarten Readiness Kit DVD. Parents and preschools can use the app to reinforce any phonics-based preschool curriculum or for independent study.”
Thanks to the easy to use interface, a 3-5 year old can play all four of the fun games independently, learning without direct parent involvement. Each game emphasizes a different language skill:
The Phonics Cards section of the app introduces upper and lowercase letters and sounds and responds to visual, auditory or kinesthetic learners. These concepts are then reinforced in the three fun games.
The Guessing Game, a child favorite, reinforces beginning sounds and develops vocabulary. It provides three clues to a word beginning with the letter under study and a card flip provides the answer.
Trace & Learn, demonstrates proper letter formation while building fine motor and preliminary handwriting. A child drags his/her finger connecting the green star to the red star to properly form a letter.
Matching & Memory, provides memory skill practice, visual discrimination and identification of upper and lower case letters. An infinite number of possibilities are included so a child never sees the same combination of upper and lower case letters twice. The high repetition capacity of all the games is beneficial to all children and provides a particularly beneficial tool for those with learning disabilities such as Down’s syndrome and autism or ESL (English as Second Language) learners. The prototypes were so well received by children that Schwary warns parents, “Just be ready. Your children will be forever pestering you for your phone.”
