San Diego’s Lightning Brewery today announced that its Electrostatic Ale was chosen 5th among the top 16 of DRAFT Magazine’s “16 Bottles to Give” for the Christmas season. “Forget what you think you know about biere de gardes,” the article explains, “this massive San Diego version doubles—no, triples—the fruity esters, bumps up the mouthfeel, inflates the ABV to 10% and spins the style on its head.”
Each year, Draft Magazine evaluates thousands of premium and “craft beers” to recommend to its readers. They have their work cut out for them. As representatives from their carefully selected, expert tasting panels explain, “2011 saw an unprecedented wave of innovative and eclectic beer—from 100% Brettanomyces ales to session beers reimagined— while a torrent of new breweries burst onto the scene.”
James Crute, Lightning Brewery’s owner, was thrilled to get the recognition. “People tell us they like Electrostatic Ale because of its bold flavors that focus on the maltyness of the grain bill, the balanced Eurocentric hopping, and estery yeast character. It’s nice to see that a nationally-recognized evaluation panel sees the same qualities in our Electrostatic Ale.” In business only five years, Lightning Brewery has won 25 nationally recognized awards for its premium and seasonal beers.
A biochemistry Ph.D. with 20 years experience in the biotech industry, Crute is recognized in the local brewery scene for his uncompromising focus on quality in Lightning Brewery beers. His experience in the application of basic biochemical principles to drug discovery fueled his interest in the chemical basis of craft beer brewing.
Currently, Jim serves on the board of the San Diego Brewers Guild, is chair-elect of the board of the Poway Chamber of Commerce, is the first honorary member of the Poway Kiwanis Club, and still enjoys attending his local QUAFF homebrew club’s meetings. He is at work on a book on the biochemical basis of craft beer brewing and enjoyment.
Lightning Brewery crafts about 1,000 barrels of its fine beers annually. This summer for the first time, Lightning shipped several of its varieties to 3 states outside of California. It will continue to expand out of state shipments in 2012. Lightning beers are on tap throughout San Diego County at establishments as diverse as Ocean Beach’s Newport Pizza & Ale to the five-star Torrey Pines Lodge.
Lightening Brewery is open to the public on Fridays from 1:30 – 5:30 and Saturdays from 1-5 for tastings at 13200 Kirkham Way, Poway, CA.
