The university's Professional Development Center offers new certificate program for upper-level managers and executives to hone their analytical communication skills.

The Professional Development Center (PDC) at The University of Texas at Austin is proud to announce the launch of its new Strategic Communications Certificate Program for 2012. This new program helps upper-level managers and professionals build more effective communication skills and strategies to successfully deliver their organizational ideas, strategy and vision to the right audiences. Participants learn the practical and analytical skills they need to become powerful, trusted sources of information for both their internal and external constituents.

“Our new Strategic Communications Certificate Program provides an excellent opportunity for professionals to hone their skills and become more analytical about their individual messaging and overall communication strategies,” stated Liliya Spinazzola, director of the PDC. “These courses provide valuable instruction on the communication tools and techniques these professionals need to help their organizations meet their strategic goals and become better positioned for continued growth and success.”

The Strategic Communications Certificate Program is made up of five courses which may be taken individually as stand-alone classes. Combined together, however, they provide a comprehensive curriculum to help participants become more flexible and adept at delivering complex ideas, strategic messaging and crisis communications, while establishing their own “strategic communications toolbox” and learning how to measure the effectiveness of their communications.

  •     February 23: “Establishing Your Strategic Communications Toolbox”
  •     March 20: “Crisis Communication: The Five Dimensions”
  •     May 10: “Measuring the Effectiveness of Strategic Communications”
  •     June 21: “Communicating Complex Ideas: The Power of Storytelling”
  •     July 10: “Delivering the Strategic Message: Make the Manner and the Message Count”

These courses are all taught on the university campus at the Thompson Conference Center by Dr. Liz Alexander, an internationally experienced communications professional whose strategic focus blends marketing, storytelling principles and professional development. For past 25 years, she has lent her creativity and business acumen to projects for organizations as diverse as the British government’s Appeals Service, Cathay Pacific Airways, Children’s Advocacy Centers of Texas, Environmental Protection Agency and Philips.

"At its core, being strategic isn't just what you do, it's how you think," says Dr Alexander. "There's no better investment a successful leader can make than to give yourself this time to develop and enhance this vital mindset. Without a strategic approach, you risk being behind the curve, forever playing catch-up."
