Usability Experts Help Healthcare Software Vendors Address New NIST Guidance

Macadamian NIST EMR usability workshop

NIST criteria expected to be enforced in next stage of meaningful use

Many healthcare IT vendors are making design mistakes that slow a healthcare team's workflow and potentially put patient safety at risk.

Macadamian, a global leader in healthcare software product creation, today announced a new service for healthcare software vendors to address the draft guidance on Technical Evaluation, Testing and Validation of the Usability of Electronic Health Records (NISTIR 7804) recently unveiled by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
The Macadamian EHR Usability Workshop assists healthcare software vendors to develop the key components of a usability action plan including a usability strategy, patient safety goals and project timelines.

"Many healthcare IT vendors are making design mistakes that slow a healthcare team's workflow and potentially put patient safety at risk." said Lorraine Chapman, Director of Research at Macadamian. "In our EHR Usability Workshops we help them understand what the evaluation criteria mean for their products, and how to improve.”

Chapman, along with internationally recognized EHR specialist and blogger, Shahid Shah, recently delivered a webinar exploring the NIST usability criteria and highlighting common mistakes when developing health software solutions.View the recording.

The Macadamian EHR Usability Workshop covers:

  •     The 7 Key Criteria of the EHR Usability Protocol and their implications for product[s]
  •     Selecting the appropriate NIST usage scenarios/workflows and providing guidance on

usability targets employing NIST’s 8 “Use Error” categories

  •     Clarifying goals for product usability benchmarking and tracking
  •     Establishing timelines for a business case and plan of action

Many clinicians agree that EHRs can be challenging to use and can introduce user errors that could be harmful to patients. Easier to use EHRs encourage adoption among eligible hospitals and physician practices which may be reimbursed under the Medicare and Medicaid EHR incentive programs.
