Healthcare providers who get ahead of the curve in adopting electronic processes will be able to provide increased access to higher quality care.”

What the post-healthcare reform landscape will look like in this country gives another country the chance to help U.S. healthcare providers deliver better patient care, improve care access, and control costs.

Liberty Science Center recently held a healthcare IT program hosted by Summit Medical Group (, the largest physician-owned multispecialty practice in New Jersey. Twelve New Jersey healthcare companies and seven Israeli health information technology (HIT) companies discussed industry trends and how emerging technology can improve clinical care.

Simon J. Samaha, M.D., President and CEO of Summit Medical Group, gave an overview of the U.S. health IT market and relevant business opportunities. The HIT market has grown significantly, driven in part by healthcare reform and mandatory implementation of electronic health record systems. Research and information analysis company RNCOS, reports that industry analysts see this market segment growing by 24% over the next two years with spending reaching $40 billion by the end of 2011.

“Another driver of this market is a growing population that will demand and increasingly be able to afford quality healthcare services,” said Karen Graham, Chief of Operations at Summit Medical Group. “Healthcare providers who get ahead of the curve in adopting electronic processes will be able to meet the demands of this population, providing increased access to higher quality care.”

Program attendees included New Jersey government representatives, major physician groups, hospitals, health systems, investment banking, and pharmaceutical companies from the Tri-state area. Nili Shalev, Israel’s economic minister to North America, introduced attendees to a delegation from Israeli-based healthcare IT companies whose systems and applications meet a myriad of clinical and administrative needs

Craig Edwards, Director of Information Services at Summit Medical Group noted, “The fields of patient engagement and personal health data protection will benefit enormously from the exciting advances presented by these companies.”

Summit Medical Group has been a leader in the implementation of healthcare information technology for more than a decade. It is currently the largest multispecialty physician practice in New Jersey using an electronic health record(EHR). Summit Medical Group now has more than 250 healthcare providers using its EHR and e-prescribing, supporting critical processes such as population health management, quality reviews, and trending.
