Individuals with diabetes can now test both their blood ketone, and glucose levels, with the Nova Max Plus Glucose/Ketone meter to help prevent diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). As noted in a recent article in Diabetes Health Professional magazine, DKA is a serious, potentially life threatening yet preventable, acute complication of diabetes. Blood ketone testing provides early recognition of DKA symptoms and gives these individuals extra time to initiate home treatment to prevent DKA.

The Nova Max Plus Blood Glucose/Ketone meter measures both glucose and blood ketones. Blood ketone testing is performed using the same procedure used to measure glucose—simply insert a ketone test strip into Nova Max Plus, apply a tiny, 0.3 microliter fingerstick blood sample, and read the ketone results. Both glucose and ketone testing on Nova Max Plus can often be performed using the same fingerstick. Glucose results are available in only 6 seconds and blood ketone results are available in only 10 seconds.

The American Diabetes Association now recommends self testing for blood ketones whenever blood glucose is elevated. According to author and Certified Diabetes Educator Ginger Lewis Kanzer, RN, EdM, CDE, FAADE., “the introduction of blood test strips for ketones is an important new development - one that healthcare professionals hope will reduce the incidence of DKA. All people with diabetes (and parents of children with diabetes) should be ready to check their ketone levels whenever their blood glucose levels are higher that 250 mg/dL and whenever they are sick.”

The recent Diabetes Health Professional magazine article points out that DKA is the leading cause of hospitalization and death among children and adolescents with diabetes and is a major concern for all people with diabetes. Mortality rate varies according to age, race and sex, ranging from 2% to 10%. The long-term medical impact of DKA is also significant. Over time, DKA can contribute to various long term complications
