Toronto Plastic Surgeon Cory Torgerson Reports Botox Treatments on the Rise

Dr. Cory Torgerson, a Toronto facial surgeon specializing in cosmetic plastic surgery procedures and non-surgical cosmetic treatments, reports that the number of clients seeking Botox treatments has increased at his Toronto cosmetic surgery clinic, backing up the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) report that the popularity of Botox treatments as an alternative to facial surgery is on the rise.

More people than ever before are turning to cosmetic plastic surgeons for treatment and, are often choosing non-surgical treatments as an alternative to more invasive surgical procedures. According to a recent survey by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), approximately seventy-five percent of all cosmetic procedures performed by the Academy’s surgeons in 2010 were non-surgical procedures. “I can confirm these findings are in line with what we have been seeing at our Toronto facial surgery clinic,” states Dr. Cory Torgerson of Dr Cory Torgerson Facial Cosmetic Surgery (http://www.drtorgerson.com). “We have found the interest in non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments, such as Botox, has increased substantially over the past couple of years,” adds Torgerson.

While current economic uncertainty has curtailed some discretionary spending, judging by the popularity of Botox treatments, it is clear that more people than ever feel that keeping a youthful appearance is a necessity and not an extravagance. The AAFPRS reports that the total number of cosmetic procedures performed annually over the last two years has risen 45 percent; with an increase of 16 percent in non-surgical procedures. As the number of facial surgeries performed each year continues to climb, with facelifts, rhinoplasty, and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) the most common facial cosmetic surgical procedures; the number of non-surgical cosmetic facial treatments performed is climbing even faster, with Botox and hyaluronic acid filler injections the most popular.

Botox is a non-surgical facial treatment that works by temporarily inhibiting the muscles that causes wrinkles. “There are several reasons to choose a non-surgical treatment like Botox, over more invasive procedures. The treatments themselves are quick and easy, usually requiring less than 20 minutes, the recovery time is minimal and it is relatively painless. While the results are not as long-lasting as facial surgery, the benefits can often last for months, as well Botox injections cost less than surgery. Other effective non-surgical treatments that are popular are injectable fillers like Restylane or Juvederm, a filling agent that gives the face a fuller appearance and diminishes lines and wrinkles. Both Botox and injectable fillers offer facial rejuvenation without surgery and can help to delay a surgical facelift. In all cases, it is important to speak with an experienced cosmetic surgeon to discuss the benefits and the draw backs of any procedure,” says Dr. Torgerson.

Botox has become a well known and accepted non-invasive cosmetic treatment that has surged in popularity, rising 584 percent since 2000. Last year, a total of 5.4 million treatments were performed. Both women under the age of 35 and men are the fastest growing group of Botox users, recognizing the benefits of non-surgical treatments as an anti-aging strategy to enhance their appearance. Two new Botox alternatives are awaiting approval from Health Canada and may prove to be serious competition for Botox. Dysport (Medics) and Xeomin (Merz) are already capturing some of Botox market share in the States, after their release in 2009.
