Want to Feel Good During the Holidays? Dr. Bonnie Says Help (Give) or Shop. There are two types of healthy highs people can get during the holiday season and Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil suggests exploring both of them: Get a "helper's high" or a "shopper's high" - and both can boost the mood!
A helper's high comes from the good will people tend to spread this time of year - giving to charity, volunteering at a soup kitchen, etc. When people help others, it's not unusual for them to find they're the ones that end up feeling good! This is thanks to dopamine, the brain chemical which makes individuals feel happy and alive. Says Dr. Bonnie: "When people do good, it triggers a response in the brain that leads to feelings of fulfillment." Dr. Bonnie suggests giving back in some way this holiday season, whether through time, finances or activities. She says people will find they're "helping themselves while helping others!"
The shopper's high may sound materialistic but it actually is a positive response to saving money on items that would normally cost more. As CBS Money Watch points out (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505144_162-57336773/10-best-holiday-coupon-offers/?tag=mncol;lst;1) there are a number of holiday coupons and deals for shoppers to take advantage of - providing shoppers with every opportunity to save money. Consumers will find that they're often paying one-third of retail, or even less! Here again, with the shopper's high, the chemical dopamine is released. There's an endorphin rush that makes shoppers feel alive and kicking! "Shopping online and saving money is often like a game," explains Dr. Bonnie. "When people get a good deal they feel like they're winning." And often they are - it's profitable for people to get great deals on items they would regularly buy at their normal price. Shopping this way during the holiday season can prove to be price-less! But as with everything, online shopping should be practiced in moderation, lest it be used as a compulsive way to fill a void.
Practiced properly, both these "highs" are wonderful alternatives to other forms of thrill-seeking that tend to emerge around the holidays. People can "shop till they drop" (instead of just shopping for what they need), or turn to cheating to get an unhealthy high. The dark side of the holiday season is that inhibitions tend to be down, stress levels are up, and people suffering from stress, separation and loss are looking to fill a void. Instead of indulging these feelings, Dr. Bonnie suggests healthy highs that have a positive influence!
