This is an incredibly honest and revealing story of my military service and my baseball administration career.

A new book is providing a personal glimpse into the life of a Navy veteran and career in professional baseball administration.

While sports journalism and military service may sound like an unlikely combo, Buck Peden sheds light on several of the different hats worn during his lifetime in “Baseball, Golf, War, Women & Puppies” (published by AuthorHouse). Presented in a classic newspaper layout with decades worth of personal photos, Peden provides a candid glimpse into his experiences in the Navy during World War II and his work as the public relations director for the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs. The book profiles his life on four ships during combat trips to Korea and Vietnam, in addition to his years as a photojournalist, columnist and sports editor.

“This is an incredibly honest and revealing story of my military service and my baseball administration career,” says Peden.

Drawn to naval fighter planes at a young age, Peden enlisted in the Navy before his senior year of high school. While in the Navy, Peden’s moonlighting as a journalist between wars helped prepare him for his career in Major League Baseball, which stands out amid all of his life’s passions.

“I had almost completed my master’s degree and teacher’s credentials when I got into Major League Baseball and went to Chicago,” says Peden. “There is no doubt about it. My ‘leash of life’ is anchored to the sports world.”

Peden’s role as public relations director led him to get up close and personal with the Chicago baseball teams. He experienced World Series and All Star games, managed team photos and handled all press-related matters for the Cubs and the Sox. He was also the executive producer of the Cubs’ annual highlights films for four years in a row.

“To speak in a journalist’s tongue, this book has it all covered,” says Peden.
