While jumper cables have their place in an emergency kit, advanced technology portable jump packs from Quick Cable make it easier and faster to jump start cold cars.

Quick Cable Corporation’s new iStart Portable Power Pack takes the traditional jump pack to a new level. Portable jump packs are ready to go in an emergency without waiting for another running vehicle or service truck. With sealed AGM batteries and new onboard technology, products like the Quick Cable iStart are more reliable, lighter and easier to use than ever before. Many have auxiliary power outlets to charge cell phones and MP3 players, some have work lights that make things easier at night—some even have built-in warning flashers for roadside emergencies.

While jump packs have been around for a few years, new models have advanced battery designs to deliver more power and reliability than ever before.

Quick Cable Corporation, makers of the well-known Rescue brand power packs found on commercial service vehicles offers an updated consumer product in the iStart. David Smith, company specialist in the battery distribution market, had some advice on selecting a jump starting unit.

“There are quite a few choices out there, but if you make the decision to invest in a portable power pack, look for indications that the unit is built well and will work when you need it,” David said. “A power pack has to have a good battery inside—look for a sealed, AGM battery. It won’t leak, and they hold their charge better. Also, look for good quality booster cables. A lot of low quality products have aluminum cables that don’t deliver much current—plus they get hot pretty quickly. Our basic iStart unit has flexible copper welding cables that are easy to use in cold weather, and they deliver maximum current from the battery.”

Other features that may be important to consider in a power pack are 12V cigarette-style outlet to charge cell phones and other electronic equipment, work and warning lights for safety, and some surprising features like LED lights in the battery clamps, air compressors to inflate flat tires, and even 120V AC plugs.

“A good basic power pack like our iStart model will get your car started and give you a light to work with. It’s lightweight and doesn’t take up much space,” David explained. “But you can get all the features you need with our wide product selection. That’s why roadside service guys—tow trucks—have Rescue power packs onboard. They’re powerful, quick to use, and dependable.”

There’s nothing worse than a dead car in a cold parking lot on a dark winter night. A call for help might mean a long wait. A portable power pack could make a big difference.
