The service allows FEMA to make information available to the American public via their existing cellphone text messaging capability along with the first U.S. Government-procured vanity short code that spells 4-FEMA (43362). Text messaging has become a major method of American communication with more than 5 billion text messages sent in the U.S. each day. The Cellular Telephony Internet Association, or CTIA, reported in March of 2010 that more than 96% of the U.S. population had a cellphone. This makes FEMA’s text messaging service a nearly ubiquitous method of communicating preparedness and disaster-related information.
The service is available on all major carriers throughout the United States. FEMA has no plans to charge for the text message updates but normal carrier message and data rates may apply so check with your carrier. The following services are currently available through FEMA’s text messaging service:

  •     Text PREPARE to 43362 to sign up and receive preparedness information
  •     Text SHELTER and your zip code or SHELTER and your city and state to 43362to locate a shelter
  •     Text DRC and your zip code or DRC and your city and state to 43362 to locate a disaster recovery center
