A Canadian First in Apartment Management as Hollyburn Properties Installs Free Wi-Fi at 45 Vancouver sites

Already an industry leader, Vancouver-based Hollyburn Properties Limited has become Canada’s first property management company to provide free Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) service as an amenity in their buildings.

Already an industry leader, Vancouver-based Hollyburn Properties Limited has become Canada’s first property management company to provide free Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) service as an amenity in their buildings. Now tenants and visitors to all of Hollyburn’s 45 Vancouver area properties have the convenience of enjoying free Wi-Fi Internet access in the common area of every building, including lobby, pool, gym, hallways, laundry rooms, and the proximity of the building.

“We pride ourselves in being an industry innovator,” said Hollyburn’s Director of Communication Peter Louwe. “When hotels began offering Wi-Fi a few years ago it was a novelty at first. Now you need to have it or you risk losing customers. I can see the same thing happening with residential apartments,” he said.

With 45 properties across the city and 23 in the downtown/West End community alone, Hollyburn is not only creating Wi-Fi Hot Zones in the community, but also they’ve built a foundation for extending the reach of Wi-Fi amenity into the surrounding neighbourhood. The potential is there to build community networks in and around Hollyburn’s properties, but that’s not the company’s immediate goal.

“We want to provide something for our tenants that they can’t get anywhere else,” said Louwe. “And so far the feedback from tenants has been tremendous.”

The building manager at Central Plaza, one of Hollyburn’s larger properties, said his tenants love the new feature.

“The nicest part of the Wi-Fi for my tenants is that they can use their tablets or smart phones while they do laundry,” said Barry Wilson. “Some people don’t want to leave the laundry room while they wash their clothes and now they can pass the time playing games or even being productive using their hand held devices while they wait.”

The next step in the action plan is to extend the service to Hollyburn’s Toronto properties.

“We’ve already rolled out Wi-Fi in our Calgary buildings,” said Louwe. “We want people to know this is an amenity you get with Hollyburn apartments and not with anyone else. Of course tenants in their suites will continue to be well served by our internet provider – this is a bonus for those who like to use their portable devices in the building’s common areas.”

As Hollyburn Properties is a major player in the property management business, the rest of the industry will take notice.

“I think everyone in the business is paying attention or they will soon. Hollyburn is an innovative trend setter in our industry.” said Marg Gordon, CEO of the BC Apartment Owners and Managers Association. “It’s new right now but I can see the day coming when people looking for an apartment will ask for Wi-Fi service as part and parcel of their tenancy. While everyone has Internet wired into their suites, this is another step in service.”
