Roper St. Francis Healthcare ends 2011 as South Carolina’s leader in robotic colorectal surgery, and the patients are the winners. Having completed more than 100 procedures, Board Certified Physician Jorges Lagares-Garcia has led RSFH to the top of the leader board for robotic colorectal surgery with 38 cases performed at RSFH’s Roper Hospital and more than 100 performed during his career. The healthcare system ranks fourth in the nation for this delicate robotic operation.
Dr. Lagares-Garcia, who practices at RSFH, is the only colorectal surgeon in the state of South Carolina, and one of a few physicians in the country, certified to perform robotic colorectal surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System. He is also the teacher of dozens of surgeons nationwide. With the da Vinci Surgical System and Dr. Lagares-Garcia’s expertise, the patient outcomes at Roper Hospital exceed the hospital’s prior results for conventional rectal cancer surgery.
“The robot does not do anything by itself. You’re basically directing the arms to go to a certain place and do the dissection,” said Dr. Lagares-Garcia. “It improves your performance for a more effective surgery and often reduces the length of stay and recuperation for patients.”
The da Vinci Surgical System is a robot-assisted, minimally invasive tool that enables doctors to perform delicate and complex operations through a few tiny incisions with breakthrough vision, precision, dexterity and control. Versus traditional surgical procedures, da Vinci reduces the length of post-surgery hospital stays by 38 percent and the width of surgical scars to 1-2 inches over the typical 10-16 inches.
Twila O’Hara was diagnosed with colon cancer in January 2011. She underwent surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System and Dr. Lagares-Garcia at RSFH. “I went in for surgery on Wednesday morning, was walking at 4 p.m. and out of there on Friday,” said O’Hara. “All of this could have been prevented. Get your colonoscopy when you’re supposed to.”
Dr. Lagares-Garcia practices at Charleston Colorectal Surgery and performs surgeries at Roper Hospital.
RSFH also offers da Vinci procedures for gynecological surgeries such as hysterectomies, cervical and uterine cancers, uterine fibroids and endometriosis; urological procedures including prostate, bladder and kidney cancers, vesicoureteral reflux and prostatetectomies.
