“We believe our school lunch program is the best way to teach the next generation healthful food habits and good environmental practices,” said Chef Vermeulen. “Children are our future; nutritious foods and sustainable practices are part of a solution."

La Prima, a local company that offers corporate and special events catering as well as a healthful lunch program to area schools, has been serving delicious, nutritious holiday meals and treats to students at its client schools this past month. La Prima’s “H Generation” school lunch program emphasizes healthful foods and sustainable practices that model and teach good habits in addition to providing lunch to hundreds of area school children.
“We love using a big food holiday like Thanksgiving to expose the kids to some new healthful choices, especially root vegetables and other seasonal fare,” said La Prima Chef Kyle Vermeulen. “December holiday treats include festive house made cookies as well.”
“While new foods, especially vegetables, can be an acquired taste for our kids, we are so pleased to be able to offer parents a nutritious alternative to making their children's lunches,” said Jennifer Hong, PTO President at St. Agnes Catholic School in Arlington, VA “Student favorites include any of the pasta dishes, tacos and the delicious fresh pineapple and other fruit that La Prima provides.”
La Prima grows some of its own organic vegetables and herbs in a large garden onsite at its College Park headquarters, including more than 750 lbs. of fresh tomatoes and more than 250 lbs. of basil this past summer.
La Prima also composts more than 1,000 lbs. of food waste each week, and recycles a significant amount of that waste. At client schools, La Prima provides compostable trays, utensils, napkins and milk containers, encouraging the schools to collect and compost their food waste. These sustainable practices are another educational component of the “H Generation” program.
“With a national obesity epidemic and the environmental challenges we face in our country, we believe our school lunch program is the best way to teach the next generation healthful food habits and good environmental practices,” said Chef Vermeulen. “Children are our future; nutritious foods and sustainable practices are part of a solution.”
La Prima Catering – and The H Generation School Lunch Program – has kitchens in five locations throughout the Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia metro regions.
