The troops’ wish came true. They’ve got their artificial turf in time for Christmas.
The U.S. Army’s 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, deployed near Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, is enjoying new lawns in recreation and reception areas, headquarters … even outside the base barber shop, making the down time in the desert a little more hospitable.
It’s a gift from Synthetic Grass Warehouse, which performed like Santa, donating 1,500 square feet of turf and shipping the oversized rolls more than 7,000 miles from its Southern California warehouse.
“The difference is amazing,” said Sgt. 1st Class Joseph Duran. “The green against all the plywood and brown really changes the feel.”
“It means a lot to us that our troops are comfortable, especially during the Christmas season,” said Victor Lanfranco, SGW co-founder. “Considering what they’re doing for us, sending them a little green grass for their home away from home is the least we could do.”
“Operation Instant Grassification” is a pilot program by SGW – America’s best-seller of artificial turf – in conjunction with industry partners TigerTurf and TenCate, plus the USO of Greater Los Angeles. SGW hopes to provide turf and facilitate delivery to additional U.S. military bases in 2012. Previously this year, SGW donated turf and materials to remodel a Wounded Warrior home in Lubbock, Texas.
This project began in July when Duran contacted SGW, looking to purchase a 10 foot-by-10 foot piece of turf to boost troop morale at a base where U.S. Army soldiers and other NATO forces supporting Operation Enduring Freedom number 5,000.
SGW chose to go beyond the call of duty, donating 1,500 square feet of their "Sierra" synthetic grass and arranging for free shipping – commercial-cargo flight to Bagram Air Base, with military air transport taking the rolls a final 170 miles to Camp Marmal.
Because of distance and logistics, it took nearly three months for the turf to arrive … but was worth the wait. Said Lt. Col. Jason Kuroiwa: “It’s great. Definitely does not ‘look’ like Afghanistan.”
