Visitors to Rainwater experience a unique glimpse into the universe that few around the country and world can offer.
Astronomy related programming includes presentations, telescope observation events, lectures and planetarium shows. As many as two hundred groups visit Rainwater each year. Learning experiences include inspiring, educational and entertaining material designed for a variety of groups.
David O. Smith, a Scoutmaster for Troop 15 from Saint Matthew Methodist Church, said, “Our 24 scouts and 8 adults received a quality program that both informed and challenged everyone regardless of their age. It is very hard to find people who not only know their material, but embrace and communicate it in a way that makes you want learn more.”
Rainwater Observatory and Planetarium is an educational ministry of French Camp Academy, an interdenominational Christian boarding school and home in Mississippi for troubled youth from first through twelfth grades, existing to serve young people and their families who are experiencing difficulty in their lives. French Camp Academy is a Christ-centered, safe, secure place providing a quality Mississippi education that includes space and science related programming.
Smith said, “The program presented by Mr. Edwin Faughn and his volunteers is absolutely one of the best educational and inspiring experiences my Scouts have ever had. This program is also unique in that it is an effective melding of both scientific and spiritual messages. We've sought out programs throughout the Southeast to motivate, encourage and inform the young men in our troop. I would have never guessed the top opportunity would be in the hills of Choctaw County. I already have boys asking to schedule this trip again. Thanks again for providing this ministry to our youth.”
Lance Ragsdale, Vice President of Development at French Camp Academy, said, “It is our desire to be of service to everyone possible by providing excellent space and science related programming that is exciting, inspiring and educational.”
