San Antonio, TX (PRWEB) December 14, 2011
Pearson is the 2011 “Special Services Corporation of the Year,” an honor bestowed by the Southwest Minority Supplier Development Council (SMSDC) at its annual “Night of the Stars” awards banquet. An education, technology and services company with more than 1,400 employees in Texas, this achievement marks the company's first honor since it joined the SMSDC two years ago.
The SMSDC annual awards recognize Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) and the corporations they support for outstanding achievement in supplier diversity. Pearson was among other national and local companies, such as Toyota, H.E.B., and Oncor, recognized at the event.
Accepting the award, Pearson's Director of Program Support Services Matt Harper said, “It’s a great honor for our company to earn recognition for our commitment to the development of minority owned business in the greater San Antonio region. This is something that Pearson strongly believes in and we demonstrate that commitment through a number of initiatives and outreach to the minority supplier community."
Harper has served as director of the company's Supplier Diversity Program since its inception in 2007. During the 2010-2011 school year alone, Pearson reported a 25 percent increase in spending with certified Texas Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUBs) and a 69 percent increased in HUBs used on its contract with the Texas Education Agency for student assessment services. In addition, in 2011, Pearson, in collaboration with the Texas Education Agency, the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts and SMSDC, launched Project Build, an initiative to provide HUBs with education and training to assist them in securing state contracts.
The MBE supplier that nominated Pearson for the award for its diversity initiatives, PRA Destination Management-San Antonio, earned the honor of SMSDC’s “MBE of the Year” with CEO and owner, Della Guidry, accepting the award.
