Once Bright Medical heard McBride’s story, the company immediately wanted to help.

In the spirit of the holiday season, Bright Medical, a national medical supply company based out of Philadelphia, is donating a transport wheelchair to a deserving New York family, struggling to survive.
The story of John “Jake” McBride, age 33, is not one often heard in the current economic climate. His great uncle, Melvin Marcus, has battled cancer and Alzheimer’s for years and has little family left.
Two years ago Jake, who loves Marcus as an uncle, left Plano, Texas, a suburb north of Dallas, for New York City to care for his ailing relative. Not only did McBride leave his hometown, but he left his job in the construction industry, not to mention the job security, benefits and reliable income that came along with it.
“There was nothing to think about. He’s family and I’m all he has left,” says McBride of his decision. “Even in this economy, family comes first. Yes, it has been more difficult than I thought, I never imagined we would struggle so much, but I don’t have any regrets about my decision. I would do it again in a heartbeat.”
Upon his arrival in New York, McBride became his “uncle’s” full-time home care taker. As expected, Marcus’ health has continued to deteriorate. According to McBride, over the past ten months Marcus has lost mobility. To make matters worse, the two are now relying on welfare to survive. Purchasing a wheelchair was out of the question.
Once Bright Medical heard McBride’s story, the company immediately wanted to help. “When you hear Jake tell his story, you can hear the genuineness in his voice, as well as the urgency. As a medical supply company, Bright Medical feels we have a greater social responsibility. Jake is so humble and brave, we had to do something,” says Allison Riney, Marketing at Bright Medical. “As sad as this story is, Jake’s attitude and actions are refreshing when you consider the state of today’s society.”
A wheelchair was at the top of McBride’s wish list. Besides providing mobility required for basic daily routines, the wheelchair will allow Jake to take his uncle outdoors. “My uncle always loved going on walks, to off-Broadway shows and the Lincoln Center together. I want to be able to take him outside again. He would love that. Even though I wish I could give him the world, it’s the little things in life that matter,” says Jake.
After hearing Jake’s story, Andrei Lemiasheuski, owner of Bright Medical, decided the transport wheelchair is most beneficial in this situation. Compared to a heavy duty power wheelchair, a typical transport wheelchairs is an ultralight wheelchair, making travelling easier. This type of wheelchair is a folding wheelchair, which will provide for convenient storage. A transport wheelchair is not as large as a typical bariatric wheelchair, and the smaller rear wheels make it easier to navigate the NYC apartment.
“Jake and his uncle deserve all of the help in the world. This has been a very humbling experience. Bright Medical prides itself on providing excellent services to our clients, making quality medical equipment more affordable and accessible to the general public, and being able to help Jake and Melvin is an added bonus. It’s the kind of action that makes it all feel worth it,” says Lemiasheuski.
The donated wheelchair will provide Marcus with more freedom and a higher quality of life, but he will still face daily obstacles, including using the bathroom and showering. Fortunately, he has Jake by his side to help.
With welfare as the sole household income, financial concerns continue to loom. Because of Marcus’ condition, he requires around-the-clock care, making it impossible for Jake to earn additional income through part-time work.
“We hope that by donating the wheelchair and bringing Jake’s story of selflessness and determination to the media, other companies will be compelled to pitch in as well. Every little bit helps” says Riney.
As for Jake McBride, he continues to help his uncle and has a renewed sense of hope in humanity. “Being comfortable may be far away, but Bright Medical’s kindness goes beyond all expectations. It can’t be put into words,” says Jake.
