An homage to the horses that both made her riding school possible and enriched the lives of Anne Wade-Hornsby and her students, "A School Horse Legacy, Volume I: . . . As Tails Go By" opens the series with the stories of 17 horses that were the foundation of the school.

A School Horse Legacy, Volume I: . . . As Tails Go By

I wrote 'A School Horse Legacy' in recognition of and as thanks to the wonderful animals that allowed me to pursue my passion—teaching and riding—and helped positively shape the lives of hundreds of riders, young and old.

A combination of serendipity, skill, and having the right horse for the job led to the establishment of Anne Wade-Hornsby’s riding school in Riverside California. An experienced special education teacher who loved horses but couldn’t afford to make all her financial and equestrian goals a reality, the author serendipitously met a financial advisor one fateful day in 1972. When she challenged him to help her save money on her taxes, he proposed turning her love of horses into a riding school, allowing the horses and all related expenses to become tax deductions. Armed with that information, her teaching credentials, riding skill, and Hashy, the “perfect” riding school horse and the first horse whose legacy the author records, the riding school quickly took shape.

After decades of teaching students of all ages, Wade-Hornsby has now written the first book in a planned series, "A School Horse Legacy, Volume I: . . . As Tails Go By", in which she shares the stories of the horses that were key to the school’s success.

“I wrote 'A School Horse Legacy' in recognition of and as thanks to the wonderful animals that allowed me to pursue my passion—teaching and riding—and helped positively shape the lives of hundreds of riders, young and old,” the author says. Wade-Hornsby’s gratitude is evident in each chapter as she describes the horses that have been key to her work, and chronicles their lives and what she learned from them.

Her choice to devote each chapter to a horse and its legacy broadens the potential audience from those who take riding lessons and are passionate about horses to anyone who is interested in how humans and animals form bonds and interact and in the “personality” of animals. Animal lovers will come away with an enriched understanding of the connections a person can share with these amazing animals and how people benefit from association with an animal that has meant so much to human history. Because these are life stories, they partake of all the elements one usually finds in such tales: goals set and achieved, journeys undertaken, fears overcome, shared joyous moments, and sad, tragic ones, as well. That is, you don’t need to be a horse lover to enjoy this volume.

In fact, the author has been careful to provide for the non-expert. A glossary—prominently placed in the front of the book—provides the reader who is new to the world of horses with the vocabulary and background, including the names of the breeds, descriptions of the colorings and markings, explanations of the equipment, terms relating to equine health, and show terms and techniques. Each chapter is illustrated with black-and-white and color photographs of the featured horse. The volume ends with a chapter of students’ recollections of the featured horses.
