Art lovers are bracing themselves for an avalanche of Gustav Klimt activity next year as museums and galleries around the world mark Klimt’s 150th anniversary.

The perennially popular Austrian Symbolist painter is known around the world for his swirling lines and organic forms, favoured over more realistic and straight portrayals. Details layer upon details in Klimt artwork, accumulating in an explosion of visual excess and bliss.
Klimt’s 150th year – he was born in 1862 – will see celebrations and events building on a strong demand for Klimt oil paintings in 2011, when several notable artworks sold well above expectations.
One example was Klimt’s Litzlberg am Attersee (Litzlberg on the Attersee), 1914-15, which sold for US$40.4 million, twice its initial estimate and a particularly high result given the global economic climate.

CheapOilPainting.com Marketing Vice President Olivia Preston said it was easy to understand why Klimt remained one of the most popular artists. “Klimt paintings appeal to all people on a wide gamut of visual and psychological levels,” she said. “Visually, we’re fascinated by the intricate, bold, bright and colourful canvases; psychologically and physically we’re all fascinated by his themes of love and the erotic. Humans are intrinsically sexual. Any art exploring ideas associated with sexuality and emotions, while being radically and beautifully presented, will strike a chord with viewers. It’s impossible not to and this is shown in the nearly monthly exhibitions of Klimt paintings around the world.”

To help mark Gustav Klimt’s 150th anniversary, CheapOilPainting.com has compiled a list of the website’s most popular Klimt paintings.

1. The Kiss, 1907-08. Klimt’s most famous painting portrays an intimate embrace between two lovers, their bodies entangled in a sweet intensity while floating on the edge of the world – a visual critique of the ecstasy of sex and love, the couple’s energy and weightlessness suggests the power of love and art as a source of union and redemption. The painting is known for its heavy use of gold leaf, providing not only a striking luminosity to the work, but also lending it an air of modernity unseen in other contemporary paintings due to its synthesis with Klimt’s trademark extravagant flat patterning and simplified composition.

2. Danaë, 1907. The daughter of the King of Argos in Greek mythology, Danaë was a popular subject for Klimt and other artists in the early 1900s.The princess embodied the prototypical symbol of transcendence and divine love – in this famous Klimt painting she is visited by Zeus, symbolised by the phallic golden rain between her legs. Her facial expression indicates the arousal caused by the King of the Gods, an evocative image not lost on viewers past and present.

3. Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, 1907. The final Klimt painting is less risqué than the former two, but demands attention due to its classic status, dramatic history and its $135 million price-tag. Adele Bloch-Bauer, wife of a wealthy industrialist, was the only subject Klimt painted twice – she appears in this version regally posed, exhibiting a baffling gaze punctuated by sumptuous red lips. Klimt again used a high amount of gold leaf throughout this work, granting the oil painting a high level of complexity and texture. As with any Klimt work, an undertone of sexuality abounds: numerous art historians have suggested that the artist and his subject were lovers.

Klimt spent nearly all his life in Vienna, Austria, and the city hopes to honour one of its most famous citizens in style all through 2012. At least 10 Viennese museums and galleries – including The Belvedere Palace – will host special exhibits, in addition to other specific events focusing on the music, literature, architecture and art of the late 19th and early 20th century and the Vienna Secession movement. The exhibitions will serve to highlight the charm of the city; although Klimt travelled throughout Europe during his life, he never truly left Vienna in a spiritual, artistic and physical sense.
