Situational intelligence enables us to constantly optimize our renewables portfolio and make fast, informed decisions about the reliable integration of alternative sources of energy into the grid.
Fremont, CA (PRWEB) December 19, 2011
Space-Time Insight, a provider of next-generation situational intelligence solutions, today announced that it has been recognized, together with the California Independent System Operator (ISO), with an Award of Excellence for sustainable technology innovation from Platts, the leading global provider of energy, petrochemicals and metals information, and organizer of the annual Platts Global Energy Awards. Space-Time Insight and the California ISO were selected for the award based on the successful implementation of a state-of-the-art system to more efficiently apply and manage both traditional and renewable energy sources for the most populous state in the U.S.
Established in 1999 and often described as “the Oscars” of the energy industry, Platts Global Energy Awards this year highlighted corporate and individual innovation, leadership and superior performance in 19 categories spanning the entire energy complex. Singling out companies for their strategic contributions to new energy, the Award of Excellence was presented to finalists in the “Sustainable Technology Innovation of the Year” award category.
The California ISO manages electricity flow across 80 percent of California’s power grid, delivering 286 billion kilowatt-hours annually over 25,000 miles of power lines. Using Space-Time Insight’s geospatial and visual analytics solutions for situational intelligence, the ISO is able to visualize, correlate and analyze large volumes of raw data from multiple sources including grid sensors, wind and solar farms, and weather feeds, in order to detect anomalies on the electric grid, maximize reliability and optimize the use of alternative power sources.
“Our state has an ambitious agenda for addressing climate change, and as a result, we want to be able to take advantage of renewable power sources—whether wind, solar, geothermal or hydro—where and when they are available,” said Steve Berberich, President and CEO of the California ISO. “Situational intelligence enables us to constantly optimize our renewables portfolio and make fast, informed decisions about the reliable integration of alternative sources of energy into the grid. It’s a powerful capability in our renewables arsenal and we are honored to be recognized as an innovator for the implementation of this system.”
“To fully leverage renewable sources of energy, today’s utilities need to correlate, analyze and understand more operational data than ever before from a wide variety of sources,” said Rob Schilling, CEO at Space-Time Insight. “By integrating renewables, weather, sensor and many other data sources into intuitive visual applications, Space-Time Insight delivers a solution for utilities to make timely, informed decisions that have immediate impact on their use of renewable energy. The California ISO’s renewables system is a great example of situational intelligence in action, and we are thrilled to be recognized with them for excellence in sustainable technology.”
The Awards of Excellence were presented during a luncheon ceremony at the Platts Global Energy Outlook Forum, which featured roundtable discussions and presentations from executives, government officials and industry leaders on “The World’s Quest for Clean Energy.” For more information on the Awards, visit the Platts Global Energy Awards website.
