Long-distance motorcycle sport-touring Nirvana was discovered in Northern California as the Motomarathon Association™ completed its third season of bi-coastal riding expeditions, and began developing its 2012 schedule.
“We’ve covered the Southwest and the Northeast pretty well over the last three years, but nowhere have we experienced what we found in Northern California as we wrapped up our 2011 season,” said John Metzger, Association founder. “Riding through Redwoods and tight, coastal twisties rivals anything in the States or Europe. I was particularly moved by lichen growing on the centerline in the wet, dark spots, glowing green in the mist through shards of sunlight, wrapped in the aroma of the marijuana harvest. Our four-day ride was like a fine California wine.”
Shawn Pearsall emerged again as the annual champion by accumulating the most checkpoints for the second year in a row, and remains the overall lifetime points leader.
“Shawn epitomizes the spirit and lifestyle of the long-distance expert motorcyclist,” said Metzger. “Of course, we all know it’s the rider, not the bike, but Shawn’s new Yamaha Super Tenere was most impressive and, along with more V-Stroms and Multistrada 1200s in the field this year, has furthered the state-of-the-art in expedition sport-touring. However, with the rumored water-cooling of the next GS 1200, BMW’s traditional domination of the sport remains theirs to lose.”
The Motomarathon Association is fine-tuning its 2012 schedule, and released the following “save-the-date” and start/stop location information:
New England Motomarathon – Danbury, CT – June 7-10
Empire State Motomarathon – Fishkill, NY – Sept. 13-16
Wisconsin Motomarathon – Madison, WI – Oct. 4-7
Great Smokey Motomarathon – Fontana Dam, NC – Oct. 27-30
Colorado Motomarathon -- July 27-30
Events may be added, and dates and locations are subject to change at this early stage of planning. Please refer to http://www.motomarathon.com for updates and further information.
About the Motomarathon Association The Motomarathon Association runs an annual series of four-day rides over the best roads and through the best scenery in the country. Routes remain secret until the night before each day’s ride, then verified at day’s end through self-recorded checkpoints using digital cameras. “The format has struck a nerve with today’s sport-touring riders, as well as with Motomarathon sponsors like Butler Motorcycle Maps (http://www.butlermaps.com) and Wolfman Motorcycle Luggage (http://www.wolfmanluggage.com),” said Metzger.
