Researchers in the emerging field of sedentary science are sounding alarm bells regarding the growing health dangers of a sedentary society. Specifically, they are concerned with the link between sitting and cancer and other chronic diseases. In this vein, researchers at the Baker IDI Heart Institute in Melbourne, Australia set out to measure the average amount of time individuals engage in sedentary behavior. The results are both surprising and alarming.

Researchers are proving that the body’s ability to defend against chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease is dependent upon continual movement throughout the day.

New research out to the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia, tallying the averages of sedentary lifestyles, found an alarming trend, we spend 15.5 hours daily sitting. Coupling this analysis with cancer biomarker studies they warned of the increased risk of cancer caused by sitting all day at the office. TrekDesk Treadmill Desks hopes to change this health dynamic by allowing employees the opportunity to workout at work by walking while working.

Researchers studying the health effects of sedentary lifestyles have been busy the past few years studying the link between time spent sitting and cancer. It is now known that modern sedentary lifestyles, even those pre-empted by daily exercise regimens cause an increased risk of chronic disease including cancer. How sedentary are we and how does that translate to cancer risks? Just ask Dr. Neville Owen of the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia.

Dr. Owen, who led the study explained the cancer risks imparted by sedentary environments and lifestyles in an interview with ABC News. "When you're sitting, the big muscles, especially in lower part of body, are completely unloaded. They're not doing their job.” These sedentary trends lower the body’s metabolism and create a number of negative biological changes which scientists can measure as “biomarkers”. Scientists can then translate these biomarkers to cancer risks. "It's been surprisingly consistent with what strong relationships there are between physical inactivity and these biomarkers of cancer risk," Owen added.

“Researchers are proving that the body’s ability to defend against chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease is dependent upon continual movement throughout the day,” stated Steve Bordley, CEO of TrekDesk Treadmill Desks. “A daily trip to the gym, though advisable, is simply not enough to undo the increased risk of chronic disease caused by sitting all day at the office.”

Designed to fit any existing treadmill, TrekDesk treadmill desk is an affordable, full sized, height adjustable workstation that allows individuals the opportunity to gain the necessary amount of exercise daily to maintain health, prevent disease, strengthen muscles, boost mood and productivity, without requiring additional time during the day or extra motivation.
