Google’s James Whittaker Declares the Death of the Tester

James Whittaker, Engineering Director at Google, declares the ‘Death of the Tester’ in a controversial presentation organised by TCL and uTest.

The presentation, organised by TCL and uTest, was a thought-provoking insight into the future of Software Testing, concentrating on the growth of the User and Developer contribution to the testing process and the product as the focus, rather than the role.

James has spent his career focusing on testing, building high quality products, and designing tools and processes at the industrial scale. He claims that programmers are getting better at testing, and testers are not getting better at programming; his focus being, “It’s only important that testing gets done, not who gets it done.”

Despite its controversial nature, the presentation received 5 out of 5 from 100% of the attendees asked.

Stewart Noakes, Chairman of TCL, stated the event to be a “brilliant success. From TCL’s humble beginnings in 2000 to the present day now the group has expanded to include enterprises in the US and India, we’ve been lucky enough to have the support of one of the most recognisable names in the industry, James Whittaker. He has had a significant impact on the field of testing.”

TCL’s next Star Testing event, The Start Up Innovation Showcase, is on 7th March 2012. For more information see the video at If you are interested in attending, presenting at or sponsoring future Star Testing events, please contact TCL’s Event Coordinator at holly.baynton(at)tcl(dot)eu(dot)com.
