Columbus, Ohio (PRWEB) December 21, 2011

VisiOne Online Research, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fathom, announced today that it would be using social media conversations to predict winners in key presidential primaries and, ultimately, the 2012 presidential election.

“Voters are actively talking on social media about the campaigns, primaries and upcoming election,” said Amy Marshall, President of VisiOne. “Our belief is that the volume and transparency of the conversation will allow us to accurately predict the winners of these upcoming contests.”

Marshall explained that conversations on social media may be more accurate than traditional focus groups and other surveying methods, because of the lack of the “observer effect.”
“In focus groups, voters know they are being watched. Strong personalities dominate, you have group thinking. Other polls may lead to bias because of how questions are phrased. Phone surveys are increasingly difficult as fewer and fewer homes have landlines,” Marshall explained. She added that most traditional polling methods are based on small sampling sets.

“However, by analyzing tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands, of conversations on Twitter, blogs and message boards, we eliminate those obstacles. We aren’t asking leading questions, we’re analyzing existing conversations, voters are speaking without the influence of a moderator or other focus groups participants and while phone numbers change, your Twitter profile is yours forever,” she said.

Marshall said that comprehensive social media software would find and aggregate conversations around the candidates, and a team of researchers would then analyze the results to make predictions on the contest based on the volume and sentiment around candidates.
Results of the analyses will be published on the http://www.visioneonlineresearch.com website. The first results will focus on the Iowa primaries, with results being published at noon on January 3rd, the day of the primary.
