We love creating these simple statements on how gesture, picture and sound can all come together. With Thicket we can share regularly the exciting stuff that we’re coming up with,” said Joshue Ott, Interval Studios.

Interval Studios, which dazzled the mobile app world last year with its pioneering audiovisual playground, Thicket, has re-cast the Thicket brand as an expandable platform for interactive experimental art.

According to Interval’s Joshue Ott, the visuals half of Thicket’s development team, “we realized that we had quite a lot more to say in the brand new genre of handheld interactive art. Morgan Packard and I love creating these simple statements on how gesture, picture and sound can all come together. It’s part of our regular artistic practice, and we needed a way to regularly share the exciting stuff that we’re coming up with.”

The original release of Thicket, now renamed to Thicket:Classic, was a collection of five related “modes” which users activated by rotating their device to different orientations. “That worked great with five modes,” says Ott, “but we wanted to keep adding to what we had started.”

The Thicket reboot, developed specifically for the iPad, features a “Mode Selector” menu with room to grow, as well as a mode store where users can purchase new modes as they are released. Users will be able to preview new modes before they purchase them, viewing recordings of the modes being played by their authors.
