An Online Course By Don E. Peavy, Sr. today released What Is Religion?: A First Look, an eight-part online religious study course by Don E. Peavy Sr. The course and its related lessons, available at, seek to introduce students to the basic tenants of various religious belief systems. Designed to teach students to both understand the beliefs of others and further explore their own beliefs, Peavy’s course approaches religion like any of the other humanities and social sciences.

“Religion can be understood and appreciated without being reduced to mental processes or evolutionary survival skills,” said Peavy. “My aim in offering this online course is to explore what religion is, why some people find it necessary, the questions various faiths seek to answer and the differences between ritual, dogma and doctrine.

Don E. Peavy, Sr. teaches religious studies at Victor Valley College and philosophy, ethics, and religion at the Dallas Campus of the University of Phoenix. Peavy practiced law in Fort Worth, Texas, his hometown, after graduating from the University of Texas at Austin. He left the practice of law to enter active ministry. He graduated from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University and pursued a PhD. at Claremont Graduate University in theology, ethics, and culture. Until recently, Peavy served as the pastor of McCarty Memorial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Los Angeles, California.

Peavy has now returned to his hometown of Fort Worth, where he is pursuing writing. He has published two nonfiction works: a book on Christian ethics entitled, “What Must I Do?: Bridging the Gap Between Being and Doing,” which was published by Kendall/Hunt in 2006 and a book of philosophy, “Play It Where It Lies: How to Win at the Game of Life,” published by Hamilton Books in 2007.
