"Usage has increased 29% (in the past year) and donations are down. $2,000 will really help, especially at this time of year."
Woodbury, Minn (PRWEB) December 29, 2011
Residents of Hugo have been known to rally around a good cause. When word got out that Postal Credit Union in Minnesota (PCU) was stepping up to the plate to donate $6,000 to local food shelves as part of its Thanksgiving giveaway - $1,000 to five food shelves within its service area - plus an additional $1,000 to the food shelf that garnered the most online votes, it didn’t take long for the community to respond.
As part of this effort, PCU sent its 44,000 members a Thanksgiving card and email announcing the donation and asked them to vote for the local food shelf of their choice to receive the additional funds. Visitors to the PCU website could also cast their vote through November 30, 2011.
Using various forms of Social Media, PCU Hugo Branch Manager Cynthia Stewart helped spread the word to various community organizations and contacts, including Kris Emerson, president and acting director of the Hugo Good Neighbor Food Shelf. Soon afterward, poll numbers started to climb. In the end, Hugo had 653 or 42.1% of the 1550 votes cast.
Emerson was delighted with the results and the generous donation. “Usage has increased 29% (in the past year), and donations are down,” she stated. “$2,000 will really help, especially at this time of year.”
Besides the Hugo donation, $1,000 checks will be presented to the Eagan Resource Center, North St. Paul Emergency Food Shelf, Neighbors Inc. in South St. Paul, and Christian Cupboard Food Shelf in Woodbury to help them restock prior to the holidays. Donations are being made through the PCU Community Foundation, whose mission is to strengthen the quality of life within our communities by supporting local initiatives at a variety of levels, including early childhood development, financial literacy programs, local food shelves and food programs, veteran’s organizations, affordable housing programs and more. Donations to the foundation are tax-deductible and funds received are reinvested into the community.
