CBE Employees Make Big Impact in Local Communities

Employees reach out and give back to support their communities.

The CBE Group, Inc. (CBE), a leader in the debt collection industry, announced the completion of a successful and stimulating year of its “CBE Cares” initiatives.

The employees of CBE showed continued generosity in 2011 as they made several charitable contributions in local communities. The CBE Cares program includes many company-sponsored campaigns that create engaging, fun and unique ways to reach out and give back to the communities. The local emphasis benefits a wide variety of causes in CBE’s four local communities: Cedar Falls and Waterloo, Iowa; Des Moines, Iowa; Kansas City, Kansas; and Atlanta, Georgia

“Giving to the local communities has become a part of who we are at CBE,” said CBE President and CEO, Tom Penaluna. “I am proud of our employees for their kind spirit and generosity throughout the entire year – not just the holiday season,” he continued.

The various CBE Cares campaigns are company-sponsored with coordination and decisions made at the employee level through committee efforts. Major campaigns that contributed to CBE employee’s generosity in 2011 included:

United Way
CBE’s annual United Way campaign proved, yet again, to be a success. CBE’s employee’s contributed over $85,000 to local chapters throughout the month of October. Fundraising events included auctions, food sales, raffles, cookbook sales and more, creating fun and competitive ways for employees to make donations.

“CBE does a great job and has a really good committee that involves all staff and makes it fun. That, apparently, is key to being one of the most successful campaigns in the Cedar Valley,” said Ron Steele, co-chair for Cedar Valley United Way in Cedar Falls and Waterloo, Iowa.

Pay It Forward
This year, CBE’s second annual Pay it Forward campaign took place in July, promoting generosity at a time when there is less focus on charitable activities. Employees recognized that need knows no season and joined forces as small teams to coordinate efforts for a cause of their choice. Employees’ efforts were showcased in a presentation of company-wide efforts shared with all staff. This year, employees’ efforts included assisting with Habitat for Humanity, volunteering, donating school supplies, contributing to the local food bank, and many fundraising benefit events.

Partners in Education
CBE continued its partnership with Lincoln Elementary School to assist in the funding of staff- and student-related needs throughout the year. In 2011, employees contributed over $5,500 through Partners in Education. Employee’s contributions and additional company funds were used to purchase wish list items, student uniforms, adopt-a-family needs and more. In addition to monetary contributions, employees volunteered time at events and in a pen pal program.

Jeans for Charity
CBE’s Jeans for Charity initiative creates an opportunity for employees in each location to make a continued commitment to support a local, non-profit organization each month. Employees' contributions make them eligible to wear jeans at work, while funds generated are given to a local charity carefully selected by a committee at each office location. In 2011, a combined $60,000+ was donated to 22 charities, including Shoes That Fit, Boys & Girls Club, Operation Threshold and Salvation Army.

“The CBE Cares program continues to grow and prove more successful year over year. It’s just another way our employees show that making positive changes starts with them, at a personal level,” Penaluna said.
