Apple has officially replaced the tangerine as the favourite stocking filler this Christmas after an independent report names the iPhone 4S as the most desirable handset.
The research, commissioned by leading online mobile retailer Dialaphone, explored which mobiles were going to be the most popular on Santa’s list.
Clear winner was the iPhone 4S, with 44 per cent of respondents saying it was the device they most desired in their stocking on December 25.
Jason Lloyd, head of online at Dialaphone, said: “There has been such strong marketing and so many great products released recently by manufacturers, that it was looking like a close race which was hard to call. Apple’s reputation and the anticipation for its new handset did look like it would come out ahead, but there can be surprises.
“In the end the iPhone 4S was confirmed the most sought after, but we couldn’t have guessed how tight it would be amongst the other manufacturers with the Galaxy Nexus narrowly beating HTC’s Sensation and Titan for second position.”
Dialaphone commissioned a nationally representative survey of smartphone users which found a total of 15 per cent hoped to upgrade their handset for Christmas.
In first place was the iPhone 4S, with 44 per cent of respondents, Samsung was the next manufacturer in the desirability stakes with a combination of the Galaxy SII and Galaxy Nexus forming 16 per cent of the vote, narrowly ahead of HTC which saw a combined 15 per cent wanting the Sensation or Titan.
BlackBerry was the next manufacturer of choice, with 13 per cent of the survey’s respondents keeping their fingers crossed for a Bold or Torch. This was closely followed by 11 per cent who wanted a Nokia Lumia 800.

The survey of a nationally representative sample of 1,007 smartphone users was carried out by Springboard in November 2011.
