Comparing the coffee culture and tea culture is like considering the difference between the West and the East. While many Westerners hardly get through a day without coffee, Vietnamese often enjoy a cup of tea first thing every morning. While tea in other Asian countries is consumed like a ritual, such as tea ceremony in Japan, tea house in China, Vietnamese drink tea anywhere, anytime and anyway they want.
Inspired by a missing representation of tea on most video databases and search engines, Director Ninh Nguyen has combined her love for tea and keen interests in documentary film making to produce the first and probably most thorough short video about the tea culture in Vietnam. Ninh Nguyen said at the launch of her arts work “Even when you have arrived in Vietnam and halted at a sidewalk tea stall, you may still be surprised to learn how tea comes to permeate almost every corner of the country like that. This down-to-earth tea drinking culture surely calls out a unique Vietnam you are looking for.”
Watching the video, one is likely to realize how Vietnamese drink the happiness and sorrow away with tea, how they cure their daily common diseases by tea and how Vietnamese lives are attached to tea.
