Republican presidential leader U.S. Rep. Ron Paul will see his name in lights this week in Des Moines thanks to native son Brian Brunk and Revolution PAC donors. A series of electronic billboards in Clear Channel’s Digital Outdoor Network is promoting Paul, now polling first in Iowa at 23 percent, today through the Iowa Caucus January 3.
The display is described by a Clear Channel representative as the first use of the advertising medium in this way by a candidate for elective office in Iowa, perhaps the entire country.
Brunk, a 42-year-old financial services consultant born and raised in Iowa’s capital city, hatched his billboard idea in early December at RonPaulForums.com, a popular online community of Paul backers. He was directed to Revolution PAC, which helped raise the funds necessary – minus $500 donated by Brunk and his wife, Andrea, and $10, by the couple’s son, Kai – for the seven-day advertising blitz.
The three billboards are located across from Merle Hay Mall, along Interstate 80 and along Interstate 235. In total, the displays are expected to generate 380,000 impressions for Rep. Paul. Ad copy may fluctuate, notes Brunk, according to daily market demands.
Brunk will also spread the word about Paul, whom he has supported since 2008, as an active participant and precinct captain at Tuesday’s Caucus.
“Ron Paul epitomizes all of the qualities I’m looking for in a president,” explains Brunk, “someone who stands for ending the wars, promoting sound currency, restoring civil liberties and following the Constitution.”
He continues, “Plus, he’s the only one who can attract the independents needed to beat Obama in the general election.”
Rep. Paul consistently measures up well to Barack Obama in Iowa in head-to-head matchups. According to an NBC-Marist survey conducted Nov. 27-29 among 2,896 registered voters, Paul ties Obama, with each candidate garnering 42 percent of the vote. Paul’s Republican rivals fare significantly worse against the presumed Democrat nominee.
“This billboard project is the perfect example of a Ron Paul grassroots supporter taking the bull by the horns and following through on a smart, fresh idea,” notes Revolution PAC Chair Gary Franchi. “The enthusiasm behind Dr. Paul is second to none and will certainly be a defining factor on Tuesday in Iowa.”
Revolution PAC is supporting Ron Paul’s consistent, constitutional message with targeted TV advertising, direct mail campaigns and innovative Web promotions complemented by billboards and radio ads in key primary states. Unlimited donations by individuals, businesses and organizations are being accepted by Revolution PAC to support that effort.
