“Don’t assume that all items are automatically protected under your current policy. If you have any questions, it's always best to check with your insurance company."

It’s fun to receive jewelry, electronics and other valuables for the holidays, but these items also can be expensive to replace if they’re lost or stolen. That’s why Amica Insurance reminds everyone to make sure their holiday gifts are properly insured.
“Some gifts may already be covered under the personal property coverage included in your homeowner’s policy, but it’s best to check with your insurance company to make sure,” said Lisa Melton, an assistant vice president with Amica Insurance.
“Don’t assume that all items are automatically protected under your current policy,” Melton said. “Certain items may need additional coverage. If you have any questions, it’s always best to check with your insurance company to make sure you have a full understanding of your coverage.”
Here are a few other reminders:
- Store jewelry and other expensive items in a safe place. If an item is not used frequently, keep it in a safe deposit box or a safe.
- Have items appraised and keep a copy of the appraisal in case you need to file a claim.
- Record serial numbers on electronics and other gifts.
- Keep copies of all receipts.
Also, keep an inventory of items in your home and photos of your valuables in case they are ever lost or stolen, Melton said. Amica’s new mobile app for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry smartphones includes a home inventory feature to help keep track.
“Don’t let lost or stolen gifts ruin your holiday season,” Melton said. “Call your insurance company to make sure all of your valuable possessions are insured.”
