New Directions Consulting, a training and development firm in southern Vermont was featured in the December issue of PSG Pharmafocus Magazine. The publication by National Pharmaceutical Sciences Group (PSG) is designed to augment the professional development of PSG members by featuring up-to-date articles about technical and compliance issues, the pharmaceutical industry, PSG courses, seminars, management skills, and other topics of interest.

Lisa Dunbar, the featured New Directions author of the article SMART Goal Setting: Defining a Target You Can’t Miss is a Senior Performance Strategy Consultant with the firm. Having been with the firm for over 25 years, Dunbar specializes in coaching supervisory and management skills, implementing and training on personality assessments, holding leadership roundtables, and performing and analyzing performance surveying for clients. Dunbar is also the past president of the Professional Human Resources Management Association (PHRMA) in southern Vermont.

Dunbar’s article explores the three main steps in creating a goal whether it is an individual, departmental, or organizational goal. The steps include believing in the power of goal setting, using effective tools and tried-and-true tips, and finally, never losing sight of goals by making progress everyday and setting up periodic review. Dunbar also highlights the acronym –SMART- which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-Oriented, and Time-Bound goals, and identifies some practical ways to measure goals against the SMART standard.

Dunbar states, “Samuel Johnson once said, ‘Few things are impossible to diligence and skill; great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance.’ That’s really what we focused on in writing this article. A lot of people are working hard; however that doesn’t necessarily mean they are working smart with the tools and talents they have. We hope that this article helps ground some of their great visions and innovations for the future into some real, practical goal-setting steps. This is a great beginning article for anyone who has a goal or idea and needs to start to figure out how to implement it.”
