In their new book, “Learning 300 Chinese Proverbs: Talk the Wisdom” (published by Trafford Publishing) Susan Zhi Chang & Peter T. Treadway compile an engaging collection of 300 Chinese proverbs, rendered in both Chinese and English.

“Chinese proverbs are, in a sense, the DNA of Chinese culture and language,” says Zhi Chang.

“Learning 300 Chinese Proverbs” presents a unique collection of Chinese proverbs. The book can be used as a tool for learning spoken and written Mandarin Chinese. This practical reference is complete with a section on grammar and offers an innovative approach to learning correct pronunciation, useful to both the beginner and the advanced student. Each proverb represents a new and unique lesson in Mandarin Chinese, using simplified Chinese and the Pinyin transliteration system.

“Learning 300 Chinese Proverbs,” which includes 22 illustrations, combines humor, history and life experiences. Readers will find poetic nuances in many of the proverbs.

“For example when the Chinese say the proverb, ‘dog chases mouse,’ they mean ‘mind your own business’ – that is, dogs don’t chase mice; it’s not their job,” explains Zhi Chang.

A project that has been in the making for five years, “Learning 300 Chinese Proverbs” is far more than the usual language textbook. It offers an overview of Chinese language and culture that goes back thousands of years.
