Content-Area Vocabulary Builder (CVB) Uses Powerful Technology and Research-Based Curriculum Content to Help Struggling Readers

Students who struggle with reading often lose pace with their peers in important content areas, such as science and social studies, putting them even farther behind in their educational development

Today at FETC 2011, School Specialty Literacy and Intervention announced the launch of Content-Area Vocabulary Builder (CVB) , an online interactive tool targeted at helping students who are struggling to master academic vocabulary in science and social studies. Developed for grades 4-8, CVB is the only online vocabulary program designed to help students learn the specialized vocabulary that presents a significant hurdle to many in subject-area learning and ultimately hinders performance on state assessments.

CVB's interactive lessons engage students, offering feedback as they complete each activity, and coach them to correct wrong answers as they progress. While topics and words are on grade level, readability is at a lower grade, allowing struggling students to work with the material at their own levels. The online lessons give students multiple exposures to each word, through virtual word cards, engaging activities, and reading passages; and audio support offers an additional learning tool, particularly for English language learners. Research shows this repeated practice leads to long-term retention. CVB supports all three tiers of the Response to Intervention (RTI) model, providing core, targeted and intensive intervention for students.

"Students who struggle with reading often lose pace with their peers in important content areas, such as science and social studies, putting them even farther behind in their educational development," said Steven Korte, President of the School Specialty Accelerated Learning Group. "Combining the power of our robust technology platform with our standards-based content resources in these two subjects, we developed CVB to offer schools a dynamic, interactive tool that meets struggling students at their level, helping them build the foundation of vocabulary necessary to understand the concepts being taught in these curriculum areas."

CVB's convenient dashboard offers administrators, teachers and IT staff powerful tools for managing its implementation. Administrators and teachers have access to real-time student progress monitoring, allowing them to target and differentiate instruction. In addition, the online interactive tool has a robust Teacher Resource Area, providing teachers with instructional support and strategies, enrichment and extension activities, word cards and graphic organizers to help them make the most of CVB for their students.

CVB qualifies for federal funding programs such as Title I, 21st Century, Title III, Title V, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT), School Improvement Grants and Investing in Innovation (i3) funds.
