Andrew A. Gumbs, M.D., has joined Summit Medical Group as a surgical oncologist and Director of its Minimally Invasive Hepatic-Pancreatic-Biliary Surgery Program.

Andrew A. Gumbs, M.D., has joined Summit Medical Group as a surgical oncologist and Director of its Minimally Invasive Hepatic-Pancreatic-Biliary Surgery Program.

In addition to his position with Summit Medical Group, Dr. Gumbs is Professor of Endoscopic Digestive Surgery at the University of Genoa in Italy. He was previously Director of Minimally Invasive Hepatobiliary Surgery and Surgical Associate Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery and Endoscopic Skills Fusion Laboratory at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Penn. He has been Instructor of Clinical Surgery at Cornell-Weill Medical College and at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, both in New York, N.Y. He has also been Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgical Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center.

Dr. Gumbs earned his B.A. in archaeological studies at Yale University and his M.D. at Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Conn. After graduating, he completed his surgical residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he earned the Teaching Award. He completed fellowships in minimally invasive hepatobiliary surgery at Rene Descartes University/Institute Mutualiste Montsouri in Paris, France, in minimal access surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, New York, N.Y., and in pancreatic surgery at the University of Verona in Verona, Italy.

A sought-after speaker, Dr. Gumbs has delivered local, regional, national, and international invited presentations primarily devoted to minimally invasive surgical techniques for the liver, pancreas, and digestive organs. His articles and abstracts on these and related topics are published in peer-reviewed journals such as Cancer, Annals of Surgery, and Journal of the American College of Surgeons. He is an ad hoc reviewer for several such journals, including Surgical Endoscopy, Annals of Surgical Oncology, and Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Gumbs is a member of the editorial boards for Journal of Gastrointestinal Cancer, Global Journal of Surgery, Obesity Surgery, and Open Obesity Journal. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, Society of Surgical Oncology, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, New York Surgical Society, and Physicians for Human Rights, among others. Dr. Gumbs is board certified in general surgery and certified in laparoscopic surgery.

Dr. Gumbs volunteers with Doctors without Borders and is Cofounder and Vice President of the Intercontinental Natural Orifice Endo-Laparoscopic Surgeons (iNOELS), which brings minimally invasive surgery to the developing world.
