“This type of commitment is what Quicken Loans celebrates and encourages in the communities where we live and work,” said Wendy Kemp, Director of Community Relations at Quicken Loans.
Detroit, MI (Vocus/PRWEB) February 09, 2011
To protect the hands of children and adults in Detroit and the surrounding metropolitan area from this year’s frigid temperatures, Quicken Loans Inc. donated more than 700 pairs of gloves to Mittens for Detroit, a community initiative founded by “Detroit 187” actress, Erin Cummings.
Quicken Loans team members came up with creative ways to collect mittens and money to purchase them, including a “comfy clothes day,” where team members wore sweatpants to work in exchange for a pair of mittens or a $5 donation, and a grilled cheese day.
The Quicken Loans Community Diff Team hosted ‘Grilled Cheese Day’ and team members were invited to purchase a full lunch that included a grilled cheese sandwich, tomato or chicken noodle soup, and a cupcake of choice from Just Baked Cupcake Shop. Volunteers were on hand to help prepare and serve food as team members could not wait to participate. At the conclusion of the lunch, $1,587 was raised to buy gloves and mittens to help those in the community keep warm this winter.
“Our company supports many non-profits and charities that have a long history in Michigan, but when work brought Erin Cummings to the city, she developed a love for Detroit and chose to make a difference with a new initiative that affects so many in our area,” said Wendy Kemp, Director of Community Relations at Quicken Loans. “It’s true that once you visit Detroit, there’s a lot of great things about the city that make you want to come back. This type of commitment is what Quicken Loans celebrates and encourages in the communities where we live and work.”
Cummings was inspired to launch the initiative after handing out candy on Halloween at her cousin’s house in Southfield, a Detroit suburb, and meeting a young trick-or-treater from Detroit who was cold because she only had one glove. The initiative partners with 10 different charities, including Covenant House of Michigan, COTS Detroit and St. Patrick Senior Center to distribute mittens throughout the entire winter season. With drop boxes in nearly 50 cities around the Detroit-area, it’s easy to “warm hearts, two hands at a time.”
Quicken Loans, a 50-state lender of refinance and purchase mortgages, will continue collecting gloves for Mittens for Detroit through the entire winter season. For more information, visit http://www.mittensfordetroit.org.
