Nation’s largest online lender sponsors local artists’ display of ice sculptures

“The sculptures can be touched and sat upon making for great backdrops for memorable photos of winter amusement in the City,” said Wendy Kemp, Community Relations Director at Quicken Loans.

Quicken Loans Inc., the nation’s largest online lender, is supporting the Motown Winter Blast for the fifth year and is proud to sponsor the Quicken Loans Ice Garden for the second year in a row. The signature winter festival takes place Friday, February 11 through Sunday, February 13, 2011, at Campus Martius Park in downtown Detroit. The artfully carved and lighted ice sculptures will be on display in Cadillac Square with on-site carving demonstrations to showcase the creativity of local artists.

“Quicken Loans is excited to be a part of an event that brings so much excitement to the city. With so many families coming here to enjoy the day, the ice sculptures serve as a reminder of how ice can be a work of art,” said Wendy Kemp, Director of Community Relations at Quicken Loans. “The sculptures can be touched and sat upon making for great backdrops for memorable photos of winter amusement in the City.”

There are winter activities for the whole family, including free snowshoeing and ice skating. Open skating takes place between scheduled exhibition routines, and rental skates are available for $3 or visitors can wear their own. Children and adults can ride the 200 foot-long, 28 foot-high, Ambassador Bridge Snow Slide for $3 per ticket.

Entertainment takes place inside and outside tents. Professional and amateur skating exhibitions will take place at the Campus Martius Park ice rink throughout the weekend. Local country, rock, blues, pop, and soul artists will perform on three stages. The always popular electronic music will be live at 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. For the youngest visitors, the Kids Zone tent is home to a variety of shows, magicians, puppeteers and jugglers.

Motown Winter Blast hours are 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Sunday. Each visitor is asked to donate a canned food item, a book or $1 to enter the festival, with all donations benefitting Matrix Human Services.

Parking is available for a discounted fee in the Compuware Parking Garage and other municipal parking lots in the city of Detroit. People Mover Stations (Cadillac Center, Broadway and Financial District) are close to the activities and are open until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The annual Motown Winter Blast debuted in January 2005, to kick off the official countdown to Super Bowl XL in Detroit. More than 75,000 guests are expected to attend the 2011 festival. For more information on all of the Winter Blast activities, visit http://www.winterblast.com.
