Bathgems.com, a major online retailer of modern and antique bath vanity products, recently opened a brand new showroom and retail location in Pacific Beach, near San Diego. In its first week of operations, the offline showroom has proven to be a lucrative supplement to the company's primary online business.

We really wanted them to be able to come in and see our high-quality vanity products for themselves, and really get a sense for the actual look and feel of the vanities before they buy.

Bathgems.com has opened their new bathroom vanity store after several months of planning and designing. The grand opening was held on Wednesday, February 2, and the store has already been showing signs of success.

Todd Harmon, founder and CEO of Bathgems.com, invested in the brick-and-mortar offline showroom as a way of supplementing his already successful online business model. “Our online store has enjoyed lots of success, but we wanted to do more for our customers,” says Harmon. “We really wanted them to be able to come in and see our high-quality vanity products for themselves, and really get a sense for the actual look and feel of the vanities before they buy.”

“Basically, we wanted our customers to be able to come in and kick the tires, so to speak. Online stores are built on faith in a product; with an offline store, we can make that faith into something way more concrete.”

When the economy began to falter, more and more offline businesses found themselves closing their doors, especially in the bathroom furniture industry. Many of these companies moved online, where “rent” and other business expenses were largely cheaper, and where one needn’t worry about expensive warehousing fees. Many online businesses tend only to drop-ship their products.

Bathgems.com, which began as an online store, is the exception rather than the rule.
“Really, we were only able to make this move [offline], because our online store was so successful already. It gave us some leeway,” Harmon says.

The offline bathroom vanity showroom is located right next to the 5 freeway in Pacific Beach, a community located just minutes from downtown San Diego.

Despite being open only a week, the store has already enjoyed some foot traffic, with curious passersby as well as locals who found the San Diego vanity store after searching online.

“I was looking for a vanity online for a home remodeling project I’m doing,” says Linda Meier, a San Diego home remodeler. “I saw that Bathgems actually had an offline store, which was really great. Not many online stores actually have a place you can go to see their stuff for yourself. And these guys were just down the street from me!”

Word of mouth has been passing fairly well so far for the fledgling store, which has a strong online marketing presence, and hopes to gain more advertisements in local periodicals and classifieds.

“Things are looking pretty good so far,” says Todd Harmon with a smile. “I can’t tell you how excited I am to watch this business grow and grow.”

The offline store is located at 5555 Santa Fe Dr Ste A, San Diego, CA 92109. Store hours are M-F 9am-6pm, Saturday 9-5, and Sunday 10-5.
