“This isn’t about lifestyle choices this is about a severe condition that most people cannot help. If a mother’s weight at birth impacts their child’s metabolism then you have a circle that can continue if not interrupted. ” said Dr. Nilesh Patel

A new study from Quebec, Canada shows that babies and children born from mother’s that have undergone a bariatric surgery procedure are healthier than their siblings born before their mother’s procedure.

It seems that a child’s health in life is mirrored by the conditions of their mother during pregnancy and labor. The study showed that the children born after their mother’s gastric bypass weighed less when consuming similar portion sizes as their siblings born pre-gastric bypass. Children born after their mother’s bariatric surgery procedure typically showed a:

  •          75% less likely chance to encounter severe obesity
  •     65% decline when measured by BMI z-score (Children’s BMI Measurement)
  •     38% lower BMI
  •     11% drop in waist circumference than their siblings
  •     20% decrease in fat content compared with their older siblings
  •     30% decrease in insulin resistance

“This isn’t about lifestyle choices this is about a severe condition that most people cannot help. If a mother’s weight at birth impacts their child’s metabolism then you have a circle that can continue if not interrupted. ” said Dr. Nilesh Patel founder of Texas Bariatric Specialists.

These new findings support similar studies showing children born after a mother’s bariatric surgery are healthier and less obese than children born to obese mothers in general (Obes Surg 2004;14:318- 24; Pediatrics 2006;118:e1644-e1649).

A gastric bypass is a bariatric surgery procedure that is the single largest contributor to these findings and is offered at Texas Bariatric Specialists. In Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery the surgeon makes a small stomach pouch at the top of the stomach, which is later connected to the small intestine bypassing the larger stomach. The gastric bypass can result in complete resolution in type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and the loss of 65 percent of excess body fat.

Experience and a tested hand are critical in receiving gastric bypass surgery or any bariatric procedure. Texas Bariatric Specialists is proud to be a Center of Excellence provider which ensures the highest in both surgical talent, cases completed, and follow-up care set by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
