Pistons Bad Boy Rick Mahorn hosts sixth annual event that will award $20,000 in scholarships, including a $2,500 online scholarship

“It is a celebration I look forward to because the students’ stories always amaze me. This is a great way to celebrate Black History Month and invest in our future leaders,” said Wendy Kemp, Quicken Loans Director of Community Relations.

Detroit Pistons legend Rick Mahorn, Quicken Loans VP Stephen Luigi Piazza and Fathead CEO Patrick McInnis will award four college scholarships to Detroit-area high school students during the sixth annual Detroit Pistons Black History Month celebration. The event will be held at the Compuware Building atrium in downtown Detroit on Wednesday, February 23 at 11 a.m. and will award $20,000 in scholarships, including a $2,500 online scholarship.

Students from Renaissance, Kettering, University Preparatory, César Chávez, Southfield Lathrup and Mt. Clemens high schools will perform a three-minute interpretation on Detroit black history in the art form of their choice to compete for scholarships, sponsored by Quicken Loans (a 50-state lender of refinance and purchase loans), the Pistons-Palace Foundation and Fathead (the leading brand in sports and entertainment graphic products). The scholarships range from $2,500 to $10,000. Following the event, students will enjoy a fresh, handmade Italian lunch courtesy of Carrabba’s Italian Grill in Sterling Heights.

The students will also receive a Pistons Fathead wall graphic, a $100 gift certificate to Carrabba's Italian Grill and tickets to the February 26 Pistons game at The Palace of Auburn Hills, where they will be recognized in a special halftime presentation. Additionally, one Michigan student will be awarded the $2,500 online scholarship and receive in-arena recognition as well.

"I am looking forward to celebrating this year’s black history event with the participating schools," said Rick Mahorn, a graduate of Hampton Institute, which is now known as Hampton University. “This educational event allows students to creatively express who they are, what they have learned about Black History and how they can use for their future endeavors."

Joining Mahorn, Piazza and McInnis as event panelists are several distinguished community members including: Wendy Kemp, Quicken Loans Director of Community Relations; Andrew Humphrey, WDIV-TV Channel 4 meteorologist; Glenda Lewis, WXYZ-TV Channel 7 anchorwoman; Anqunette Jamison, WJBK-TV Channel 2 anchorwoman; Dr. Darrius, WJLB radio personality; Benny White, Executive Youth Liaison to Mayor Bing; Marlena Taylor, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, Michael Williams, CEO of Orchards Children’s Services; LaShell Griffin, local recording artist; and Camille McCray, Marketing Manager of Carrabba's Italian Grill.

“The black history celebration is one of the first events I partnered on with the Pistons, and each year the event just keeps getting better,” said Wendy Kemp, Director of Community Relations for Quicken Loans. “It is a celebration I look forward to because the students’ stories always amaze me. This is a great way to celebrate Black History Month and invest in our future leaders.”

“Detroit has such a rich, dynamic history, and there are so many stories to tell,” said Patrick McInnis, CEO of Fathead. “These young people have found a creative, personal way to share their impressions of black history and what it means to our city.”
