(ISC)2® (“ISC-squared”), the not-for-profit global leader in educating and certifying information security professionals throughout their careers, has honored information security educator John O’Leary, CISSP, with the 2011 (ISC)² Harold F. Tipton Lifetime Achievement Award, and Warren Pearce, CISSP, with the 2011 James R. Wade (ISC)² Service Award for his many contributions to the organization.
The awards were presented to the two recipients last night at the (ISC)² member reception in conjunction with the RSA 2011 Conference in San Francisco.
The annual (ISC)² Harold F. Tipton Award recognizes an individual’s life-long contributions to the improvement of the information security field and profession. The award’s namesake, Hal Tipton, is a security industry pioneer and (ISC)² co-founder. The annual James R. Wade (ISC)² Service Award recognizes volunteers who have made a sustained and valuable contribution to (ISC)2. The award’s namesake was instrumental in making (ISC)² the organization it is today through his active and tireless volunteerism.
“These annual (ISC)2 Board of Directors awards represent the pioneers who are bringing excellence to the industry,” said Board awards committee chair Dan Houser, CISSP-ISSAP. “Both award recipients have demonstrated outstanding mentorship, leadership and service to the profession throughout their careers.”
As the recipient of the 2011 Tipton award, O’Leary was honored for his dedication in providing information security education and training to tens of thousands of practitioners, conducting on-site training programs at major corporations and government facilities worldwide over many years.
“John has not only taught countless information security professionals the best practices in the industry, he also inspired professionals in other disciplines to divert their career paths towards this profession,” said (ISC)² Board chair Diana-Lynn Contesti, CISSP-ISSAP, ISSMP, CSSLP, SSCP. “Through his life’s work, John has developed a career path to which others aspire.”
O'Leary’s background spans four decades as an active practitioner in information systems, IT security and contingency planning. He designed, implemented and managed security and recovery programs for networks ranging from a single site to multinational enterprises. In addition to his training efforts as president of O'Leary Management Education, he has facilitated meetings of Working Peer Groups, where security professionals from diverse corporations share ideas, concerns and techniques.
As the recipient of the 2011 James R. Wade (ISC)² Service Award, Warren Pearce was recognized for his years of service as a test supervisor for (ISC)2 exams. Pearce was one of the original (ISC)2-certified members and served as co-chair on the test administration committee, helping to write the test supervisor’s manual.
“Warren has been one of (ISC)2’s ‘go-to’ people, making time to supervise an exam anywhere or anytime, often at the last minute and at his own personal expense on occasion,” said Board member Benjamin “Ben” H. Gaddy, Jr., CISSP, CSSLP, SSCP. “The organization would not be where it is today without his gracious dedication and mentorship, and for that, we are forever grateful.”
