GTM Sportswear® and the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) are pleased to announce Ben Whitford as the GTM Sportswear® Athlete of the Month for January 2011. Whitford will be recognized at a press conference at Marmion Academy, Aurora, IL on March 3, 2011 at 7:35 am. He will receive an award, GTM® merchandise and be featured in various GTM Sportswear® marketing materials.
Whitford has been the ringleader of Marmion’s rise to national wrestling prominence this season. He led the Cadets to a fourth-place finish in the Asics Walsh Ironman Invitational at Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, winning the 130-pound title with two first-period pins, decisions of 11-5, 11-6 and 11-5 and a 3-1 finals decision over Brandon Jeske of Virginia Beach (Va.) Frank W. Cox High in the championship match. At the Al Dvorak Memorial Invitational two weeks later at Machesney Park Harlem High, Whitford, the defending AA state champion, won his 60th consecutive match to start his career, scoring five takedowns in a 12-5 finals victory over defending AAA champion Joe Gosinski of Carol Stream Glenbard North High, ending Gosinski’s 71-match winning streak over two seasons.
“The National High School Coaches Association is proud to recognize Ben for his outstanding performances, not only on the field, but in the school and community as well,” said Bobby Ferraro, Jr., Executive Director of the National High School Coaches Association. “It’s truly an honor to recognize someone of this stature.”
"GTM Sportswear® is honored to be partnering with the NHSCA in recognizing outstanding student athletes such as Ben. "We are very proud of Ben and his outstanding achievements."
The NHSCA and GTM Sportswear® will honor one deserving high school athlete each month through April 2011. NHSCA Coaches can nominate commendable athletes through the NHSCA website. Each month six finalists will be selected by the NHSCA and presented via ballot to a group of high school sports writers, high school coaches, NHSCA and GTM® representatives to choose the winner. Out of the eight recipients of the monthly award, one athlete will be chosen as the GTM Sportswear® Athlete of the Year in May 2011.
