In Baseball Hits and Bible Bits, (published by CrossBooks), pastor and former Dodger minor league pitcher Frank D. Minton shares unforgettable stories and anecdotes about two of his great loves in life—baseball and the Bible.

When Minton was 11 years old, God called him to preach. That call to service the Lord would never leave his heart. His Wichita, Kansas North High School baseball exploits earned him a scholarship at the University of Oklahoma and eventually a contract with the Dodger’s Organization.

After three years, despite great success in the minors, he realized following God’s call was more important than making it to the big leagues. He turned down the Dodger’s contract offer for a fourth year, leaving baseball behind to become a Baptist minister. It was one of the most difficult decisions of his life, but according to Minton, he traded a Diamond for a Crown.

Baseball poems and Christian songs are sprinkled throughout, and sketches by artist Berth-el Young add dimension and feeling. Minton’s daring night chase after a young gang leader adds excitement. A poem from the book:

Minor League rain-outs
In Montana.
No sun only gray sky.
Waiting for the wind
To slow down
and the rains to end.
The game was holy
and the rain sacred.

Mark J. Mitchell

With stories about baseball greats both past and present such as Sandy Koufax, Josh Hamilton, and Albert Pujols, and rich autobiographical details of a life lived in the service of the Lord, Baseball Bits and Bible Bits has something for just about everybody—from little leaguers to “bush” league big leaguers.
