Hershel is a prized Chinese bog bred to fight, but from the very beginning, no one seems to think he’s the pick of the litter.

The irrepressible spirit of a loveable little dog takes him from rejection and abandonment on a series of adventures to find his true home in Hershel the Dog (published by AuthorHouse), the heartwarming new children’s book written by Elsie Tysseland and illustrated by Rik Fitch.

Hershel is a prized Chinese bog bred to fight, but from the very beginning, no one seems to think he’s the pick of the litter. A physical defect that prevents him from fighting makes him useless to his owners, who callously throw him out to die on Hawaii’s beautiful island of Maui.

Fate intervenes when Hershel is rescued by a loving couple who takes him in, give him shelter and nurse him back to health. Just as he’s getting adjusted to his new home, the couple leaves for vacation and a family friend comes to dog-sit.

Always looking for adventure, Hershel wanders off one day to explore the beauty of Maui. One mountain in particular looks exciting, and before he knows it, Hershel has climbed all the way up! At the top of the mountain he finds a church, where he meets a kind priest and other friendly people. Everyone is enamored with the little dog and his endearing antics, and the priest lets Hershel stay until his owners return.

Based on a true story, Hershel the Dog brings Hawaii to life on each page with vivid descriptions and captivating illustrations by award-winning, Maui-based artist Rik Fitch. Playful and whimsical, children and adults alike will delight in this charming new book.
