Shawnee Peak Ski Area in Bridgton, Maine, hosted the 8th Annual Mary's Firemen for a Cure on Saturday, March 5, 2011 to raise money for the Maine Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Teams of five firefighters raised Shawnee Peak's modified race course, dressed in full turn-out gear and connected with a 50-foot-long length of hose!
The brainchild of Mary (Abbott) Allen, a long-time Shawnee Peak marketing employee, the Firemen Race for a Cure started in 2003. Mary lost her battle with breast cancer in 2005, but her husband, children, friends and family continue the event in her honor each year.
Slightly more than $10,000 was raised through individual team fees, contributions and corporate sponsorships. Yahoo! Corp then matched the entire amount, giving the Susan G. Komen Foundation a total of $20,000.
"We're so pleased the Shawnee Peak continues to host the event," said Wayne Allen, Mary Allen's husband and event producer. "Mary was passionate about raising awareness about and fighting breast cancer. It's our honor to continue her work today."
Firehouses from Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts are invited to participate in next year's event - tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 10. Team fee is $125 and includes the following for all five team members: a t-shirt, lift ticket, race and chili lunch. Call Melissa Rock at 207-647-8444 ext. 15 to inquire.
