On Saturday, March 12, Michelle Phillips, songwriter of California Dreamin', and @iamWUMRPRES 2012 join Assemblyman Gil Cedillo and other celebrities in a Mass Twitter march supporting the "California Dream Act" and President Obama

Michelle Phillips, a songwriter of California Dreamin', and the sole remaining member of The Mamas and The Papas, will lead the @iamwuMRPRES “California Dream Tweet” march in support of The “California Dream Act” and President Obama. The California Dream Act is a bill that gives undocumented citizens access to loans and grants for higher education. "Michelle” will give undocumented citizens a powerful anthem to help end legislative discrimination.

On March 12, 2011 - @iamwuMRPRES 2012 (I AM WITH YOU MR. PRES) and its lead artist organizer Michelle Phillips will join forces with Assemblyman Gil Cedillo, Homeboy Industries, Ricardo Dalmacci, First Lady Michelle Obama’s LET’S MOVE! Chef Lauren Von Der Pool, The Coalition to Reserve Human Dignity and friends to begin the drive to harness the efforts of many Latino and mainstream organizations, churches, universities and interested allies into an effective campaign to pass the "California Dream Act." Together they will march with Obama’s Twitter Army and open the passageway to higher education. Merging the shared educational desires of undocumented students with all Californians who believe in equal opportunity, they will march, chant “California Dreamin”, and tweet #iamwuMRPRES-dream. This Mass Twitter March is dubbed the “California Dream Tweet”

The California Dream Tweet is an effort to get the California Dream Act passed by transforming the perception of the bill as a niche piece of legislation into a mainstream initiative. The California Dream Act and Dream Tweet represents the consensus of forward-thinking Americans and
challenges Californians to take a moral stand against mistreatment of students who, through no fault of their own, have been brought to the United States and desire to contribute to the society they love by continuing the American dream.

The California Dream Act would not provide a path to citizenship as a national DREAM Act would. It does, however, "allow undocumented students to access the same financial aid opportunities as every other child." Those eligible would be able to receive student loans to both
community colleges and four-year universities at a low interest rate.

The classic song “California Dreamin'” was chosen as the anthem for the California Dream Tweet march because it induces both lament and hope while representing a basic cry of humanity.

Michelle Phillips is the lead artist/activist of the march and will conduct our Latin, Rock, and Rhythm and Blues guitarist marchers.

Assembling at Father Sierra Park on March 12, 2011.

  • Beginning at 1:30 PM, President Obama’s Twitter Army will assemble at Father Serra Park (located downtown at 125 Paseo De La Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90012) - a part of Olvera Street.

“Michelle Phillips and @iamwuMRPRES 2012 are pleased and excited to collaborate with Assemblyman Gil Cedillo and our friends on strategy and events concerning the California Dream Act. Allowing undocumented students of all ethnicities a chance to pursue their dreams and become productive contributors of this great nation’s future is the American Way," said @iamwuMRPRES 2012 Mikal Kamil. ”The plight of the great Latino people, in particular, is of great concern to us and @iamwuMRPRES 2012 and the Latino community will drive this issue forward together as one!”

Will.i.am and Mikal Kamil envisioned “@iamwuMRPRES” 2012 as a global call to action intended to inspire the masses to show their unrelenting support and belief in President Obama’s vision and to help him build a twitter army for the 2012 Election.
