Endurance Cyclist Bests 100-Mile Road Bicycle Record Mark By More Than Three Minutes

McGehee's RideClean team sets an example for athletes and serves as inspiration for McGehee

Dr. Dan McGehee of the RideClean Cycling Team powered by PatentIt.com Cycling Team set out in Pinal County, AZ to break the 100-mile road bicycle record. McGehee and his skeleton crew consisting of Al Schott, Greg Hemmerlin, Dean Stoneburner and McGehee’s father, along with two Ultra Marathon Cycling Association (UMCA) officials, launched just after dawn.

The surveyed course circled through farmland in Pinal County, where temperatures were cold and averaged only 56F over the 3 hours and 52 minute record time. McGehee’s first three laps of the circuit were spent getting his heart rate up in the low temperatures while his concentration was fixed on the cadence and pedaling rhythm. His patience with a slow beginning paid off even though his fingers were freezing and gloves were kept on. His lungs caught up with him near the end and the last 20 miles were spent “digging deep,” to hold his pace. McGehee prevailed by a comfortable margin, and solidified the American hold on the UMCA Record that has bounced back and forth between the Mesa, Arizona resident and the Slovenian rider Marko Baloh.

“I was spurred on by the thoughts of how many people have supported these endeavors over the years - especially last year’s attempt (at the world 100-mile track record).” said McGehee. Last year’s sponsors included Doctor Finders whose logo during this current record-setting time trial could be seen both on his wheels and skinsuit, a specialty garment fabricated by the team’s clothing supplier for this particular discipline. “The RideClean team is great when it comes to setting the example for other athletes. It’s really something that inspires me,” said McGehee.
